trick or treat!

this is the kind of post only family cares about. my apologies to those of you who wanted something of substance (but seriously? when have i ever delivered anything of substance? keep your standards low, people!).

ava as dorothy from wizard of oz (and no, she has no idea who that is). almost every picture of her is blurry. she no longer holds still. it's awesome. seth went as a baby wearing a sweat suit with a pumpkin face on it. see how his expression matches the one on the sweat suit? he's a lively one, that seth.

the day began with pumpkin carving. ava wanted both to smile. she was adamant about this. i think she's seen too many scary things this year. when scared, ava puts her hand to her chest and pats it, saying, "scary". it's darling.

i made ava do most of the work. she described the innards as "goopy". she says that word with great clarity.now the child is obsessed with matches. she loves them, she talks about them, she wouldn't leave the pumpkins alone and burned out the little pumpkin's candle extra fast by throwing several matches in there. can you tell i am a pumpkin carving fool? (i am not) the evening ended with a lively round of trick or treating. our first stop was to my parent's house where we practiced. it was a good thing, too because my mom opened the door, ava spotted the candy and pushed my mother aside to get to it. it took about three houses to get all that out of her system. while watching other children get candy at my parent's house, ava began to fuss and pointing to the candy, cried, "my trick or treat! my trick or treat!"

we left my parent's and met our friends back at the house for trick or treating around the cul-de-sac. their daughter, eliza, is ava's best friend. naturally, i didn't manage to pull my camera out to get some pictures of the two of them together.

"trick or treat" and "boo!" are also said with great clarity. i'm grateful that three phrases we use once a year for one day only can be said so well. it makes my job easy. . .for one day only once a year.

this year was the most fun i've had on halloween since i was a kid myself.

happy halloween!

Isn't it nice that we can go back to blogging about the mundane things in life again? Well, that's not to say that your adorable kids are mundane, but, well...you know what I mean. :) I haven't pulled myself out of the post-election reverie yet, but when I do, I've got a plethora of Halloween pictures I have to post. :) I love all the "Ava-isms." Keep them coming. She is so precocious!

HA HA! What a cute Halloween story! Kate was the same with the candy. I did not think to practice and yes she did invite herself in to complete strangers' homes and snatch as much candy as she could get her little paws on.

That costume on Ava is aborable. And those shoes! I love them.
Did Mom get a lot of trick-or-treaters this year?

The answer to that, Amanda, is no. We didn't know what to expect, but figured we were living in a regular neighborhood now and there might be LOTS of trick-or-treaters. We didn't want to run out of candy so we bought 4 big bags. We had about 8 trick-or-treaters, which is about 6 more than we get our real house, counting my own kids. Dad starting taking out big handfuls and dumping them into the kids' bags.

That last photo is adorable. She looks like she's saying, "There's no place like home."

Having such fun on Halloween is pretty big for you considering, as I remember, you were always slightly confused by this holiday.

tara- you're totally right. i don't like halloween. in fact, i don't really like a lot of holidays. i'm a natural grinch.
