aside from the hysterical laughter after watching ava NOT dance, i turned around to see my father doing what both of seth's grandfather's do when they first hold him. something about this kid makes grown men attack with love. and look, he doesn't even mind.

the best part of our week

so, good news! we got haircuts. and do i really need to add that we love them?

my sweet baby. when i see this picture, i ache. i ache for the tiny baby that he once was, i ache for the boy, the man he's going to be. i find it incredible that i love him so much.

what seth did this week

1. vacuumed the cat. it worked splendidly. he thought it was hilarious until the cat reacted.

2. fell into a rose bush. the scratches make him look as though he had vacuumed a thousand cats. taking him out in public is now slightly embarrassing. watching him point to each one and tap it lightly with his little finger and pity himself is adorable.

3. pulled my dresser drawers out and climbed them like steps to reach the forbidden--and highly coveted ipod earphones. it was impressive and terrifying all at once.

4. pulled a pair of ava's underpants and got them mostly over his diaper. that bad boy was sportin' princess jasmine like no boy child ever has.

5. ate sand. and then had some more. then, he washed it down with a little ocean water, then he had some more. the beach was amazing, the weather perfect, but the sand consumption was less than ideal. and now that seth is mobile the beach is a dangerous place. nothing will stop him from diving head first into the ocean water. it was partially cute, partially exhausting and partially terrifying. my baby is going to drown before he sees his second birthday.

this week we spent a lot of time riding bikes down the driveway. seth watched ava do it once, pushed his little car up to the top, climbed on and pushed off. i was both terrified and impressed. he was thrilled.

my mom went on a cruise before seth was born and bought this seal for ava. seth has found it and attached himself to it. he carries it with him all the time, talks to it when he's walking down the hall and hugs it every time he sees it. my favorite thing, though, is when he points to his seals nose and says, "GAAA?" with glee, as if he invented that nose.

real seth tears. real ryan smile. they both really love to see the temple.

and then seth was all, "maybe you could put that camera away? and put real food on my tray? yeah, that'd be great."

when ava was but a young lass, i refused her sugar like any self respecting, over-protective, mother-of-one would do. and she didn't have any until she was about a year-and-a-half. then i had seth. and i tried again. and i was doing pretty good, too. until one day i saw ava offer her popsicle to her younger sibling. he took a lick and you could see the exclamation point form over his head.

"WHAT IS THAT? WHERE DID YOU GET IT? WHERE'S MINE? CAN I HAVE ONE? GIVE ME ANOTHER LICK!!!" and then he was jumping and clawing and attacking ava ferociously and then she was screaming.

"MOM!! SETH'S BUGGING ME!!!" but i can't say that i responded quickly because she's always saying that. always.

now boy child is getting his own popsicles these days. granted, i break off a major portion of it, but still, he's holding it all by himself and this pleases him.

a day in mammoth was spent taking family pictures. this was the "men" shot and of course, my happy little baby who is almost a year old is in it. and he's smiling this sweet sort of ryan smile that makes me feel like if i don't squish him, i'll explode.

oh yeah, and everyone else looks good, too. it's ridiculous how good looking this family is, and i'm not just saying that. wait till i show you what the women look like!

boy child doing what boy childs do best: sitting in mud in a full and muddy diaper, chewing on a stick. ava was rather squeamish and attempted to hold him back. she also tattled on him repeatedly. by george, there IS a difference between boys and girls!

so seth has learned to drink from a cup, see? now there's no stopping him from knockin' a couple back at the end of every work day. i think it's my irish blood shining through.

crawling. i can tell it's going to be over soon, since he is starting to stand on his own and travels along all of our furniture. i'm ready! i'm tired of wrestling with him whenever we go somewhere. he wants to be on the dirty ground and i don't want to hose him down later.
